November is Diabetes Awareness Month. We hear a lot more about diabetes than we used to and for good reason; Type 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions. As a leader in home medical equipment and pharmacy care, Williams Bros. Health Care Pharmacy cares about the health of our customers and the community.
Here are just a few of the recent statistics on diabetes that Williams Bros. Health Care Pharmacy wants you to know:
In the most recent studies, nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and another 86 million Americans (more than 1 in 3 U.S. adults) have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is where their blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. 86 million Americans! That is almost 3 times the current number of cases. 1 in 4 Americans doesn’t know they have diabetes. That means they are not treating it and that can mean serious trouble.
More than 1 in 2 Hispanic men and women (over 50%) non-Hispanic black women are predicted to develop diabetes.
Diabetes is not just a health issue, it’s an economic issue. The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion. That’s BILLION with a “B.”
Who can get diabetes? Can you get diabetes? 2 out of every 5 Americans are expected to develop type 2 diabetes during their lifetime. The experts say that you are at increased risk for developing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes if you:
Are 45 years of age or older.
Have a parent with diabetes.
Have a sister or brother with diabetes.
Have a family background that is African-American, Hispanic/Latino, American-Indian, Asian-American, or Pacific-Islander.
Had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes), or gave birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more.
Are physically active less than three times a week.
