Do you know how to properly handle your medication? There’s more to it than just following your doctor’s instructions. Today, Williams Bros. Health Care Pharmacy would like to share four things you shouldn’t do when it comes to handling your prescriptions:
- Don’t store medication in the bathroom.
Moisture in the bathroom after a long, hot shower can actually damage the pills or capsules you keep in there. The temperature changes can cause your medications to weaken or spoil before their expiration date. Keeping your prescriptions in your nightstand or kitchen cabinet away from the stove is a better option.
- Don’t flush your pills.
Many medications don’t break down completely in water, leaving traces connected with drinking water. Some pharmacies allow you to take your medications to them to dispose of. You can also throw your medications away in the trash after mixing them with dirt or kitty litter, then put it in a sealable bag to throw away. Furthermore, be sure to scratch off your medicine packaging information before tossing the container.
- Never share your prescriptions.
Your doctor only prescribed you, and you alone, that prescription. You may think that it is safe to give to someone else with the same symptoms, but even after you look up more about it online, problems can still arise. That person may be allergic to a medication ingredient within the pill or be taking another prescription that could interact with your medication.
- Less can really be more.
When applying gels, creams, or ointments, be sure no to go too crazy. Certain medications can cause swelling, peeling, or a rash to form. Always be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist how much you should apply. If an issue arises when you are applying the correct dosage, be sure to contact a professional.
