Avoid These 4 Things When Picking Out Compression Garments

Posted on: January 27th, 2017 by WilliamBros Blogger

Compression garments can help with a wide range of conditions, including lymphedema, pregnancy, deep vein thrombosis and soreness from exercise. There are a variety of compression fits, and choosing the right one can make all the difference in your treatment. Here are four things to avoid when picking out your compression garment:

  • Avoid guessing your compression garment class.

Some compression garments are more restrictive than others. The amount of pressure a garment exerts is divided into three different classes. The least amount of pressure is a Class 1, which is 15-20 mmHg (millimeters of Mercury), while the most pressure is Class 3, at 30-40 mmHg. Generally, Class 1 is recommended for athletes with aching legs, while Classes 2 and 3 are for more serious medical conditions. Consult your doctor or therapist before deciding which class will work best for you.

  • Avoid guessing your compression garment size.

Just like clothing sizes are different from brand to brand, so also compression garment sizes may differ from one manufacturer to another. Be sure to review their descriptive sizing by both length and width to find your ideal size. Take down your own measurements to see if they line up.

  • Don’t wear a compression garment that is uncomfortable.

Compression garments take time to get used to, but you should not be in discomfort while wearing one. This usually means the garment is not at the right class of pressure for you. Too much pressure in the wrong place will force the fluid to other parts of the body. Alert your doctor or therapist right away if you’re experiencing discomfort while wearing your compression garment.

  • Don’t wear an old compression garment.

With regular use and laundering, the average lifespan of a compression garment is around four to six months. Once you’ve reached that mark, the elastic will start to wear out, and your compression garment will no longer be effective. We recommend that you have several compression garments on-hand that you can cycle through, so you don’t have to replace them quite so often.

At Williams Brothers Health Care Pharmacy, we have a large selection of compression garments, and would love to help you find the best garment for you and your needs. Check out our collection in our online catalog, or stop by today!
